World-leading research

100% of our research impact has been classed ‘outstanding’ or ‘very considerable’ (Research Excellence Framework 2021, combining 4* and 3* submissions – Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience).

Research activity in the School is broad and extensive, with regular seminar programmes taking place in all research areas.

Our School has particular expertise in cognitive neuroscience, psychopathology, personalised nutrition and language sciences.

We have invested heavily in purpose-built research facilities, including:

  • A Neuroscience Centre housing a Siemens 3T Prisma MRI scanner and MRI-compatible TMS, EEG/ERP and thermal stimulator for generating pain
  • Virtual reality, vision, pain, sensory and psychophysiology labs
  • Eye-tracking facilities for in-lab and remote testing
  • Wet lab
  • Nutrition lab
  • Infant observation rooms

Collaborations and funding

We have active collaborations with other departments and research centres within the University as well as with external institutions.

We receive funding from the Economic and Social Research Council, Medical Research Council, and the wider University, and have a strong track record of securing funding from other public and private sector sources.

We also offer a cotutelle PhD, where you study jointly at two different institutions, with our partner institution Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia.
