There is a strong evidence base showing that work is good for physical and mental health and wellbeing.
The University recognises the crucial contribution that our people make to the achievement of the University's aims. We are aiming to be not just an employer and equally we want colleagues to feel that they are not just an employee.
The University has formal obligations to protect its staff by trying to minimise the hazards they are exposed to at work. Whilst the effects of exposure to physical hazards such as noise, dust and chemicals has been acknowledged for many years, there is also growing evidence work issues such as work life balance and pressure at work can also impact on our health and wellbeing.

Preventing and Managing Stress
The University is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for its staff and recognises the importance of fostering psychological as well as physical well-being. Stress is a complex subject and the University has to deal with its effects irrespective of its source.The University aims to reduce the levels of stress so far as is reasonably practicable. This is achieved in practice through appropriate job design, creating a supportive work environment, training and supporting managers and employees to assist them in preventing and coping with workplace stress, and supporting employees if and when they are experiencing stress.

Wellbeing Peer Support
Wellbeing Peer Support is a network of trained University staff who are a first point of contact if you are experiencing a mental health issue, poor wellbeing or emotional distress.
Bullying and Harassment Support
We have a network of volunteers from across the University that form the Harassment Peer Support Network who are ready to offer support and advice. We have also recently introduced , an online system allowing staff, students and visitors to campus to report sexual harassment, bullying and other incidents to the University
Diversity Networks
We have a number of diversity networks helping to support and promote diversity and inclusion. These include BAME Network, LGBTQIA+ Network, Parent and Family Network and women@reading

Occupational Health
Occupational Health look at how work impacts on health and vice versa.
Staff Forum
The staff Forum are a group of volunteers who actively discuss and seek practical solutions to improving your working experience. As part of this, they bring forward questions, ideas or concerns to senior management. Staff Forum also helps the University to inform and consult with employees grades 1-5 but is not a trade union. The ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø has a formal recognition agreement with the University and College Union (UCU), giving them sole bargaining rights for staff on grades 6 and above.

Coffee with a Colleague
Coffee With a Colleague (CWAC) is a new scheme that offers colleagues across the institution an easy way to connect with others outside of their immediate area of work.
Trade Union
The ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø has a formal recognition agreement in place with one Trade Union, the Universities and Colleges Union (UCU)
Chaplaincy
Life at the University can be full of challenges. Sometimes it helps to speak to somebody. All of the chaplains are available to provide a listening ear. Feel free to call, email or just drop in.
