Funded by the Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national institute for data science and AI, and organised jointly between the universities of ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø, Durham and Warwick, we are holding an interdisciplinary event aimed at academics, industry and organisations with an interest in application of data science and AI (especially machine learning) across a range of humanities-based sectors. This includes identifying examples of ‘successes’ of machine learning, gaps and barriers in its take-up, and opportunities and benefits of enhancing application of data science and AI in the next two, five and 10 years.

The event will comprise presentations and discussions across three main themes:

  • Data Science and AI in Digital Arts and Humanities, with a focus on heritage, digital collections and archival studies.
  • Data Science and AI for the Creative Industries, with a focus on media production.
  • Ethical, Legal and Societal Aspects in AI for the Humanities, with a focus on issues surrounding acceptability: governance, privacy and ethics associated with developing AI technology and their use by all stakeholders in the process.

The event will contribute to the writing of a white paper to inform the Alan Turing Institute and interested parties worldwide of the issues, challenges and opportunities in this space. Furthermore, a series of interest groups will be set up to continue the conversation and include opportunities for partnership-building and research collaboration.

Confirmed speakers include from the BBC, AI companies Metaphysic.ai and DeepZen, Natural History Museum, Royal Botanic Kew Gardens, and the universities of Durham, ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø and Warwick.

There will be ample opportunities for networking. Lunch will be provided.

If you have any queries, please contact the Turing university contacts and event organisers James Ferryman or Bonhi Bhattacharya.

Note: The ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø officially joined the Turing University Network in April 2023. The aim of the structured and inclusive network is to facilitate meaningful connections across the UK data science/AI landscape.
