Rishil excelled in computing at school. He watched as technology evolved around him and knew where he saw his future career.
When he was offered a place to study computer science at the ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø, he knew that it was his best option. Apart from its wonderful campus, excellent teaching and friendly atmosphere, the University's location is key for any computer science student.
For Rishil, the University's relationships with nearby global corporations, such as Vodafone, Huawei, Verizon, Nvidia and Microsoft, gave it a leading edge.
This hub of technology companies gives students an advantage. A number of these companies provide active input into the course, to ensure that learning is professionally relevant.
The University's placement scheme is also flexible. Rishil points out that you don't have to commit to a full year in industry – you can choose summer and shorter placements.
A dedicated placement officer supports students in securing a placement* and is on hand to guide and advise students in finding the best placement for them, as Rishil testifies:
“Sandra Ilett in the University's Placements Team helped me work on my CV. All the various workshops were great, with topics like how to choose a placement, writing applications and helping you with interview skills.â€
On his industrial placement year, Rishil worked in the Innovation Team at Vodafone Business, who work on establishing strong business partnerships with external companies.
“I collaborated with various companies to develop a range of Internet of Things solutions. My responsibilities included product development, establishing new software frameworks, delivering presentations to stakeholders and co-creating solutions.â€
Rishil explains the benefits of his placement:
“Most importantly, it prepares you for a job. I developed deeper perception, communication, tact and listening abilities. These are powerful complements to the 'hard' technical skills I acquired on my placement and at University.â€
After making an impression, Rishil has now been offered a graduate role with Vodafone. He is looking forward to his two-year scheme, during which he will rotate between positions over three UK locations, with international opportunities as well.
“I would encourage anyone to do a placement. It boosts your job opportunities and learning abilities so much. I believe it is the key to success. ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø is ideally placed, being so close to such an important centre of technology business.â€
