Heart of a major digital tech hub in the UK

Jag Shergill

Jag Shergill was attracted to the ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø’s connections to neighbouring international technology companies. He also loved the beautiful campus and friendly, welcoming atmosphere.

He chose to study BSc Computer Science with Industrial Placement at ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø as it had an advantage over other UK universities:

“The University is in the middle of the UK's Silicon Valley; a major tech hub. This was a key factor for me. It's a massive advantage to be on the doorstep of so many companies.â€

Strong relationships with surrounding businesses

The University has established relationships with major companies in the area, including Oracle, Cisco Systems, Microsoft and Intel. Several of these companies provide input into the University's teaching, ensuring that our students develop the skills relevant to industry.

Many ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø students enjoy professional placement years with these leading companies, with support from the University's Placements Team.* Students can undertake a year-long assignment or choose from a range of shorter or summer placements.

Jag's year-long internship at Oracle Corporation was a great achievement that positively impacted him in many ways.

“My placement with Oracle helped me achieve my goals. All my coursework since the placement has been marked at a higher grade. Another great aspect was working with people from all over the world. It was interesting and demanding. The year really honed my professionalism and drive.

"Sandra Ilett from the University's Placements Team was incredibly helpful  when I was applying for my placement. The University's workshops covered things like choosing a placement, writing CVs and applications, and building interview skills. This practical help was exactly what I needed.”

A stepping stone into the workplace

Jag made a significant impression at Oracle. He received the FY19 Innovation Award and some of his work has been rolled out company wide. He contributed to projects such as the development of an internal chatbot to aid hardware engineers with daily engineering tasks.

Jag's advice to those contemplating a similar route is:

“Be open and ambitious. Don't close off opportunities before you approach them. Instead, explore what's out there and follow your instinct. I strongly recommend a placement year. It not only helps towards your final year but also by providing a crucial stepping stone into the workplace.

"ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø is one of the best universities to deliver world-class placements."
