Areas of interest

Dr Patel's research started in the area of Pharmaceutics. His PhD thesis was investigating whether formulation of microemulsions for delivery of medicaments to the lungs was possible. Thereafter, he had post-doctoral positions involving the development of food-acceptable microemulsions for use in the functional food market, and the design of simulated intestinal fluids for use in a cell culture based in-vitro model. He then received the Maplethorpe Fellowship to investigate gene delivery formulations for delivery to the lung using propellant-based metered dose inhalers.

Over the last few years, Dr Patel has developed research skills and developed a research portfolio in health services research, which has included evaluation of clinical services, medicines use and pharmacist roles. Research methods have included audits, service evaluations, systematic reviews and qualitative tools. He is also interested in Clinical Pharmaceutics, which aims to promote translational research across both the clinical/practice and pharmaceutical science settings.

Postgraduate supervision

Dr Patel has supervised several PhD and Master’s students, looking at topics which have included pharmacists and GP practices, medicines adherence, drug shortages, IV drug compatibility and use of unlicensed medicines.

Background

Dr Patel obtained his Pharmacy degree at King's College London and returned there to do his PhD in drug delivery. After his PhD he obtained the Maplethorpe Fellowship, which helped him further develop his teaching and research. This then led to a lectureship in Clinical Pharmacy at King's after which he joined Kingston University as a Senior Lecturer in Pharmacy Practice. He is now an Associate Professor in Pharmacy at the ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø and since joining ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø, he has been a module convenor, Year Tutor, MPharm Programme Director and is currently the Director of Pharmacy Practice. Over this time, Dr Patel has undertaken teaching across a range of topics and has supervised numerous student projects, Master’s projects and several PhD students. His teaching in mainly in the area of pharmacy law and professional practice. He also undertakes reviews of ethics applications, sits on the fitness to practise investigation committee and also on the pharmacy wellbeing, inclusivity, diversity and equality committee. Dr Patel is also a grant reviewer for PRUK, and external examiner, and an editor and reviewer for several research journals.
