Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE) scheme

Advance HE runs the Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE) scheme, a scheme that recognises and celebrates collaborative work across the country that has had a demonstrable impact on teaching and learning.

Introduced in 2016, the scheme highlights the key role of teamwork in higher education. It aims to raise the status of learning and teaching, provide teams with national recognition and profile of their collaborative work, and provide an extension to institutional team-based recognition schemes. Each year up to 15 teams receive a Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence. On gaining an award, CATE winners join a national community of like-minded professionals who share their passion for collaborative approaches to teaching excellence. Each CATE team member has a role to play in becoming an ambassador of the scheme and supporting the ongoing enhancement of learning and teaching.

Each year, UK higher education providers are invited to nominate one team that can clearly demonstrate having an impact upon teaching and learning at an institutional or discipline level.

CATE Roadshows

Advance HE, in collaboration with the CATE Winners’ Network (CATE-Net) will be presenting a series of free, virtual roadshows in 2024-25 to support those interested in applying for the CATE. These roadshows will offer an overview of the CATE and guidance on the application process for those interested in applying in 2025. All will include a brief introduction to CATE and an overview of the professional and institutional benefits. The CATE application process will be outlined and there will be practical guidance and suggestions from previous CATE winners, plus time for questions and answers. All four roadshows will cover the same content (however the fourth roadshow is aimed at nominations for CATE 2026 and beyond).

Each webinar is free and open to Advance HE UK Members. Once a place is booked, joining instructions will follow a week ahead of the event.
