NTFS Expressions of Interest

Selection Process

The University is committed to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion through its Teaching & Learning funding and award schemes, and to ensuring that these schemes are accessible to all colleagues. We welcome applications from individuals from underrepresented backgrounds, including ethnic minority, LGBTQIA+, disabled and neurodivergent applicants. We also welcome applications from the wide range of disciplines and areas across the University, including colleagues in professional services roles and those on part-time contracts.

The University selects its nominees for the NTFS in the following way:

A call is made for self-nominations to be submitted to the Centre for Quality Support and Development (CQSD) using the Expression of Interest form (see below).

The NTFS Selection Panel selects up to 3 nominees to go forward into the NTFS. Nominees are selected according to the extent to which their application meets the scheme criteria.

The NTFS Selection Panel comprises:

  • Two Associate Pro-Vice Chancellors (Education and Student Experience), one of whom will act as Chair
  • Two ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø National Teaching Fellows
  • A CQSD representative
  • ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø Students Union Education Officer

The NTFS Selection Panel reserves the right to consider potential candidates not otherwise nominated through the Expression of Interest route.

Following the selection process, the University's nominees will be allocated an appropriate mentor to support them in drafting their application to Advance HE.

Expression of Interest Scheme criteria and guidance

Nominees are required to clearly articulate their role in developing and leading excellence in teaching and learning and/or the support of teaching and learning over a sustained period, both within and beyond the University. The application is framed around three criteria, which align with those of Advance HE's NTF Scheme. Applicants are asked to articulate the reach, value and impact of their practice in relation to the three award criteria and to indicate the evidence they would draw on to support the claims made. Nominees are asked to set out what is distinctive about their approach and they are encouraged to contextualise their case and the evidence provided in respect of the different criteria within a strong personal narrative.

Criterion 1 Individual excellence (300 words) Evidence of enhancing and transforming student outcomes and/or the teaching profession; demonstrating impact commensurate with the individual's context and the opportunities afforded by it.
Criterion 2: Raising the profile of excellence (300 words) Evidence of supporting colleagues and influencing support for student learning and/or the teaching profession Including demonstrating impact and engagement beyond your immediate academic or professional role 
Criterion 3: Developing excellence (300 words) Evidence of commitment to and impact of ongoing professional development with regard to teaching and learning and/or learning support.

Applicants are strongly advised to adhere to the maximum word limits for each section. The Selection Panel will not take into account any words exceeding these limits. Applicants should avoid including hyperlinks, logos and pictures within their application. Diagrams and tables are permitted (any text should be included in the word count for the relevant section).

In order to assist potential applicants to consider whether they could build a strong case for NTF, we have also compiled an NTF self-evaluation checklist which nominees may wish to refer to when completing the Expression of Interest form.

Scheme requirements and additional information

Nominees for the NTF Expression of Interest Scheme should normally be a University Teaching Fellow and/or recognised at D3 (Senior Fellow) or D4 (Principal Fellow) by Advance HE. Please refer to the Guidance for Staff on the HESA Codes for Teaching Qualifications.

Applicants are expected to discuss their application with their School Director of Teaching and Learning/Head of Service, who should be asked to sign the Expression of Interest form prior to submission. This serves to raise awareness within Schools/Services of teaching and learning expertise, to confirm the SDTL/Head of Service’s support for the application and to validate any claims made. A list of applicants will be shared with the Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellors (Education and Student Experience) ahead of each Selection Panel meeting for information.

Successful National Teaching Fellows are expected to work with CQSD to provide some mentoring support for future applicants. They will also continue to play an active role in enhancing teaching and learning across the University through, for example, contributing to staff training and development, supporting the dissemination of good practice and participating in/leading University Working Groups.

Applicants will normally receive the Selection Panel's decision and feedback (usually via email) within four working weeks of the closing date .
