In 2023, Paul Glaister, our Professor of Mathematics and Mathematics Education, received several prestigious national appointments to add to his existing portfolio.

Recognition in the King's New Year Honours

The year began with Paul being appointed CBE – Commander of the Order of the British Empire – in The King’s New Year Honours List, in recognition of his services to education.

Appointments in 2023

The start of 2023 also saw Paul take on his newly appointed role as the UK representative to the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI), an organisation devoted to global research and development in mathematical education.

More appointments followed during the year, including election to the Chair of The Royal Society’s Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education (ACME) Expert Panel for A levels, election as Honorary Secretary of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) with responsibility for awarding Fellowship, Chartered Mathematician, Chartered Scientist, Chartered Mathematics Teacher, and Advanced Data Science Professional, and membership of:

  • the Advisory Board of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences (AcadMathSci)
  • the Advisory Board and the Steering Group of the Campaign for the Mathematical Sciences (CaMS, formerly Protect Pure Maths)
  • the Governance Board and the Professional and Accreditation Standards Committee of the Alliance for Data Science Professionals (AfDSP)
  • the Steering Committee of Maths4Girls (part of Founders4Schools)
  • an Expert Panel on AI Skills for the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT)
  • External Subject Specialist panels for Ofqual
  • External Expert Advisory panels for the Department for Education (DfE), and Chair of the Expert Panel for Core Maths.

Giving evidence to the UK parliament

In September, Paul was the sole representative of the mathematics and mathematics education community giving evidence to the House of Commons Education Select Committee hearings for their inquiry on teacher recruitment, training and retention.

President-Elect of the Mathematical Association of the UK

The year culminated with Paul being appointed as the President-Elect of 153 year old Mathematical Association of the UK.

He will become the 107th Mathematical Association President in a list comprising some giants in the world of mathematics, including Professor GH Hardy (FRS), Professor Sir James Lighthill (FRS), Professor Sir Michael Atiyah (OM FRS), Professor Sir Christopher Zeeman (FRS), former ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø Head of Mathematics, Professor E H Neville, and more recently Professor Hannah Fry (HonFREng), and Professor Nira Chamberlain (OBE).
