When you study in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics you'll be part of a friendly, diverse community of staff and students who are passionate about pure and applied mathematics. We work together to create a welcoming and conducive learning environment that helps you to achieve your goals and make the most out of your time at ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø.

Life as an undergraduate

When you study a degree with us, you'll balance  a variety of teaching sessions alongside independent study. Through our group sessions you'll have opportunities to form strong working relationships with staff and make new friends.

Lucy Edwards, third year student, talks about how she found her first year in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

How we support you

You'll receive a wealth of support from our academics. They are approachable and committed to helping you make the most of your time at ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø as you progress through your degree.

You'll be assigned an academic tutor who you'll have one-to-one sessions with, who can guide you to any additional support you may need during your studies.

We place a great deal of importance on supporting you in the transition to university-level mathematics study. Our staff provide weekly drop-in sessions, and you'll be able to benefit from support from final-year students through our peer-assisted learning scheme.

97% of our students said teaching staff are good at explaining things (National Student Survey 2024, 96.97% of responders from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics).

Learning environment

Join a University named Sustainable University of the Year (The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025) and ranked 1st in the UK for environmental and ethical performance (People and Planet University League 2023/24). We were also the first ever winner of the Times Higher Education (THE) award for Outstanding Contribution to Environmental Leadership in 2023.

As well as learning in lecture halls and seminar rooms, you'll benefit from access to our PC lab, where you'll have the opportunity to learn programming software that is used in industry.

You'll find ample study space in the recently refurbished ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø Library.

If you're studying one of our joint degrees, you'll also have access to some of our practical facilities on our campuses. For example if you study finance and investment banking, you'll make use of three dealing rooms, which are equipped with the latest industry simulation software.

The first thing I noticed as a student was how open and welcoming the Department is. As a student with a disability, I felt I was able to receive the support I needed not just from central campus but from the Department as well. So don’t be afraid of being your authentic self.

Our main campus is set on 130 hectares of beautiful parkland, so you'll find plenty of places to relax. Our campus is home to a thriving community and features the Students' Union, Library and places to eat.

Connor's story

The ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø has the best campus in the UK in my opinion. The open green space really helps you to relax between lectures. It wasn't voted as one of the top ten green spaces in the UK for no reason!
