This short, intensive course is designed to improve practice and add value for those who mentor others in any profession. This is a distance learning module, which enables flexibility and autonomy.

You will explore mentoring from a variety of perspectives, starting from a definition of mentoring and moving on to consider theoretical models, good practice within mentoring and common issues. A range of contexts will be considered, including initial teacher education, as well as other settings.

You will also draw on your own experiences of mentoring in making links with current theory. Themes explored in the module include:

  • Self-assessment and reflective practice
  • Effective communication
  • Effective feedback and target setting
  • Contemporary issues of mentoring
  • Leadership of mentoring in a setting
  • Assignment skills development
  • Theories of mentoring
  • Management of difficult conversations and conflict resolution

This is a standalone module that complements our well-established MA in Education programme. On successful completion students will be awarded 20 credits at Master’s level. These credits can contribute to our MA in Education programme.

To undertake this course, you should be able to provide evidence of successful study at level 6. Participants should be currently employed in a setting where mentoring is an aspect of practice. This module requires students to be independent and autonomous in their studying and learning.
