Professor Emeritus of Sustainable Futures in the Built Environment
Areas of interest
Tim’s personal research interests revolve around the interface between the sustainability agenda and its impact on construction, infrastructure, property development, investment and occupation. The research is based on a strong interdisciplinary approach which incorporates policy and practice impacts and futures thinking. More specifically this research includes:
- Social sustainability and social value.
- Net zero and climate change in the built environment
- Smart and sustainable cities and big data.
- Sustainable real estate: investment, development and occupation.
- Sustainable urban regeneration and brownfield issues.
- The role of private sector investment and development in urban regeneration.
- Futures and foresight studies, including the impact of ICT on commercial property and real estate markets, urban futures, and city visioning.
Research projects
Tim has carried out funded research for a variety of organisations, including ADEPT/DfT; Climate KIC, Berkeley Group; Countryside Properties; EPSRC, Office of Deputy Prime Minister (and DTLR); Joseph Rowntree Foundation; British Property Federation; RICS; Foundation for Built Environment; British Council of Shopping Centres, British Council for Offices.
Background
Tim led the University’s input into the ‘ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø 2050’ vision for a smart and sustainable city. He also co-chaired the ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø Climate Change Partnership, which is working to create a sustainable, resilient and net zero ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø by 2030, and was formerly a member of both the Climate Change Advisory Group for Wokingham Borough Council, and the Thames Valley Berkshire LEP Net Zero Taskforce.
His recent book on Urban Futures (Policy Press) won the best book award 2022 (Urban Affairs Association).
He is a Research Associate at the Global Centre for Healthcare and Urbanisation, and a Visiting Fellow at Kellogg College (both University of Oxford)
