Areas of interest
Tim Renshaw’s research interests develop through the medium of painting and the particular ways in which forms specific to painting may be a vehicle for meaning. In particular he gives attention to the multiple planes of painting and what he describes as their various communicative potentials. His research into the plane of painting is informed through perceptual reflection on surface effects produced through painting, the language of planes in the history of painting and through exchange with plane phenomena outside of the discipline of painting, notable architecture. Related to this are questions concerning paintings contributions to embodied and affective knowledge of spaces.
- Form and meaning through planes in painting
- Surfaces of architecture
- Spatial phenomenology
Tim’s most recent exhibition, the larger in/and the smaller, in April 2023 was at the Thames-side studio gallery (). The paintings and drawings for the exhibition developed during a year-long sabbatical funded by a Lorne Award. During the sabbatical Tim supplemented his research into planes of space through residencies at The Mahler-LeWitt studio’s in Spoleto, Italy and Cill Rialaig, Ireland.
Postgraduate supervision
Tim welcomes research proposals on part practice research projects in the areas of:
- Form and meaning in painting
- Spatial thinking in painting
- Painting and its relationship to embodied thought
