About us

The Information Management and Policy Services office, IMPS office, sits within Legal Services.

What we do

With a responsibility for development and implementation of information strategy and associated policies, the IMPS office ensures that the University complies with the Freedom of Information Act, the Environmental Information Regulations and Data Protection laws.

We can provide advice and assistance on the following:

  • Data sharing and disclosures (internal and external requestors)
  • Data relationships and security assessments of suppliers
  • Data retention and disposal
  • Data Protection training
  • Data security incidents
  • Privacy notices
  • Data protection and marketing
  • International transfers of data
  • Research data management plans
  • Data Protection Impact Assessments

We can help with any queries regarding data protection and security, from ad hoc questions through to representation on significant projects.

If unsure, it is best to ask. We are here to advise on any matters, big or small, so don’t be afraid to check in with us.

The IMPS team work very closely with various teams and departments across the University, in particular:

Legal Services*

Digital Technology Services

Procurement

Research Data Management and University Research Ethics Committee

Library and Archives

Marketing Communication and Engagement

Alumni and Careers

Planning and Strategy Office

Human Resources

Student Services

*Please note - The IMPS team are not a 'legal team'. Whilst we work very closely with Legal Services, we do not provide legal advice. Where matters relate to contracts we may liaise with Legal Services, or signpost you to their team.

We also have a network of colleagues across functions and schools that provide valuable assistance to the IMPS team, details of which can be found on the staff pages.

IMPS is a very small team, with a wide remit. If you are contacting us for advice, doing this at the earliest opportunity can help us to meet your own deadlines and factor in data protection requirements and best practice from the offset. Remedying compliance issues retrospectively can be more disruptive and costly, so where you can, talk to us as soon as you can.

The IMPS office is also involved with developing and implementing policies and staff guidance on:
