As a master's student in the Department of Archaeology, you'll be part of a community that is passionate about its subject.

You'll have the opportunity to learn from world-class researchers in a department that is ranked 1st for Archaeology for research quality and research outputs (Times Higher Education Institutions Ranked by Subject, based on its analysis of REF 2021), and is in the top 100 in the world for Archaeology (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024, 51-100 in the world).

Presentation given to a class
Combining work with studies [as I did] is of course a juggling act, but I have had the support of both the Department and my work. At points where I have struggled, the lecturers have always been there to offer support and have been able to make adjustments to ensure I would get coursework completed.

Our Community

We value everyone as members of our community, and recognise that we each have unique perspectives, abilities, and ideas to offer. Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion working group brings together staff and students to ensure that the values of inclusivity are present in our classrooms, activities and spaces.

We hold an Athena SWAN silver award, which recognises our focus on gender equality.

Athena SWAN promotes representation, progression, and success for all. It focuses specifically on the advancement of women's careers across higher education in all academic fields, and on intersectionality and equality. The charter also promotes our support for transgender staff and students.

Your environment

We pride ourselves on providing a friendly and engaging environment in which to pursue your learning and professional development, working together with us and with other students.

Smaller class sizes at master's level mean that staff get to know you as individuals, allowing us to provide advice and assistance tailored to your interests and needs.

Our facilities

Our custom-designed Archaeology building is the heart of our department – a bright and cheerful home away from home for many of our students.

Alongside our specialist teaching labs and artefact collections, we have a dedicated reading room for Masters students, a Graphics Suite, and spaces to sit and chat – all within the same building.

The building is just a short walk from the Library, the Students’ Union building, cafés, and other amenities on the Whiteknights campus.
