Overview
Module aims and purpose
This module aims to enable students (with support) to be clinically competent in the assessment and management of paediatric clients with speech, language, communication and eating/swallowing disorders. To develop reflective practice, clinical reasoning and decision making with this client group. To gain an understanding of the communication profile of older people.Â
Module learning outcomes
By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:
- Analyse information gathered to assemble a holistic and culturally relevant speech/language/communication/eating and drinking profile of an individual child.
- Explain features of impaired communication in paediatric clients relative to relevant medical, social, psychological and linguistic models, within a range of different settings.
- Manage a child’s clinical need in a safe, holistic, inclusive and non-discriminatory manner, with the client at the centre of the process.
- Present a concise and professional written and verbal account of children with communication/eating and drinking disorders.
- Evidence development of professional skills of clinical reasoning and reflective practice.
Module content
Lectures/seminars in semester one and two develop students’ knowledge and skills in the processes of assessment, management and service delivery across paediatric settings. They address the further development of professional and clinical skills to be employed within the year’s placements, including reflective practice, evidence based practice, clinical reasoning, inter-professional learning and understanding of professionalism and communication skills.Â
Relevant NHS and Social Care/Education legislation, including policies and procedures, are integrated into the teaching throughout the module. Statutory and mandatory training will be updated in the summer term. The NHS values and constitution, the World Health Organisation's International Classification Framework and the HCPC standards of conduct, performance and ethics are integral to the teaching and clinical placements.Â
Child development assignment: Students continue an observational study of a child from a local family in their own home during semester one and two.Â
Clinical Placements: Students attend a mixture of simulated, observation and hands-on paediatric placements throughout the year.Â
Structure
Teaching and learning methods
The module comprises a varied approach to teaching and learning, utilising lectures, seminars, small group teaching, online resources, clinical practice placements and a focus on case-based learning.Â
Study hours
At least 48 hours of scheduled teaching and learning activities will be delivered in person, with the remaining hours for scheduled and self-scheduled teaching and learning activities delivered either in person or online. You will receive further details about how these hours will be delivered before the start of the module.

Requirements for a pass
Students need to achieve all of the following to pass this module:
- A pass in the placement supervisor assessments
- An overall module mark of 40%

Penalties for late submission of summative assessment
The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:
Assessments with numerical marks
- where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of three working days;
- the mark awarded due to the imposition of the penalty shall not fall below the threshold pass mark, namely 40% in the case of modules at Levels 4-6 (i.e. undergraduate modules for Parts 1-3) and 50% in the case of Level 7 modules offered as part of an Integrated Masters or taught postgraduate degree programme;
- where the piece of work is awarded a mark below the threshold pass mark prior to any penalty being imposed, and is submitted up to three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline), no penalty shall be imposed;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
Assessments marked Pass/Fail
- where the piece of work is submitted within three working days of the deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): no penalty will be applied;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): a grade of Fail will be awarded.
