Overview
Module aims and purpose
This programme gives students an opportunity to gain experience applying for and completing a paid year work placement with an employer related to the student’s degree studies or long-term career goals. They will be able to reflect upon their strengths and weaknesses gained in this new learning environment. Half-way through the placement, the students will produce an audio presentation to promote their placement to part 1 and part 2 students describing the benefits of the placement (so far).Â
Module learning outcomes
By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:
- Explore and develop their professional experience
- Identify and evaluate the skills and knowledge required to be successful in the workplace
- Reflect on their strengths and weaknesses
- Identify actions for continuous learning and career prospects as graduates
Module content
The area of work undertaken on the placement will be related to the students’ overall programme of study or long term career goal. The day-to-day content of the work will be set by the placement employer and in agreement with the module convenor. Â
Students will organise their own work-based placement to take place for one year between parts two and three. This will be a paid work placement that is related to the students degree subject or long term career goal.Â
Please note that the placement must be approved by the module convenor and compulsory pre-placement training must be completed prior to the placement commencing to aid transition into the workplace.Â
Based on the placement experience gained, the student will produce a reflective report and poster. Students will also produce an audio presentation that will be used to promote placements to part 1 & part 2 students.Â
Structure
Teaching and learning methods
At the beginning of the Summer Term students will attend pre-placement training run by the module convenor to discuss the programme aims, and transition into the workplace. 1:1 meetings with the module convenor will be scheduled by the students to ensure:Â
- the placement is suitable and has sufficient capacity to meet the expected learning outcomes intended for the Programme;Â
- students understand what is expected of them for this programme, including the assignments and the importance of professional behaviours in the workplace;Â
- all necessary health and safety, risk assessments and legal agreements are in place;Â
- the placement employer has agreed to the terms of the placement and provides sufficient support, training and development to enable the student to develop and achieve their intended learning outcomes.Â
Students will be supported whilst on placement through regular communications from module convenor. The module convenor will visit the student and their manager halfway through the placement year and additionally if required.Â
Study hours
At least 2 hours of scheduled teaching and learning activities will be delivered in person, with the remaining hours for scheduled and self-scheduled teaching and learning activities delivered either in person or online. You will receive further details about how these hours will be delivered before the start of the module.

Penalties for late submission of summative assessment
The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:
Assessments with numerical marks
- where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of three working days;
- the mark awarded due to the imposition of the penalty shall not fall below the threshold pass mark, namely 40% in the case of modules at Levels 4-6 (i.e. undergraduate modules for Parts 1-3) and 50% in the case of Level 7 modules offered as part of an Integrated Masters or taught postgraduate degree programme;
- where the piece of work is awarded a mark below the threshold pass mark prior to any penalty being imposed, and is submitted up to three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline), no penalty shall be imposed;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
Assessments marked Pass/Fail
- where the piece of work is submitted within three working days of the deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): no penalty will be applied;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): a grade of Fail will be awarded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
