Overview

Module aims and purpose

This module continues on from IF0NU1 and helps students further develop the academic language, skills, and strategies needed for university study.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of complex and abstract academic texts within a limited time
  2. Demonstrate understanding of extended spoken monologues and dialogues, delivered at normal pace
  3. Interact orally with others in the exchange of information and the development of ideas and opinions on complex topics, with limited planning time
  4. Present information, ideas and opinions orally on complex and abstract topics, in a coherent and clear manner, and respond appropriately to questions about their presentation
  5. Respond in writing to a given question in a relevant, coherent and communicative manner

Module content

Consolidation and extension of the reading, listening, speaking, writing skills and language knowledge introduced in IF0NU1, with a particular emphasis on the following English for Academic Purposes skills: 

  • Writing: planning and organising texts; developing and supporting arguments; looking at essay questions and selecting the most appropriate way of organising a response; redrafting and editing written work  
  • ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø: selecting appropriate reading strategies; analysing texts; identifying main ideas and opinions  
  • Speaking: participating in oral presentations and group discussions; developing oral fluency and communicative strategies 
  • Listening: listening to authentic texts, taking notes, listening for detail and identifying main or supporting points 
  • Integrating reading and writing tasks e.g. reading texts and reporting back to peers 
  • Integrating listening and speaking tasks e.g. listening to a lecture or talk and presenting key ideas to other students; participating in group discussions while using appropriate communication strategies 
  • building academic vocabulary further  

Structure

Teaching and learning methods

This module will employ a communicative approach to language and skills development. Students will be actively engaged, working together in pairs and groups. Students will be expected to work independently outside class, individually and in groups, both to complete assignments and further develop their own language. 

Study hours

At least 112 hours of scheduled teaching and learning activities will be delivered in person, with the remaining hours for scheduled and self-scheduled teaching and learning activities delivered either in person or online. You will receive further details about how these hours will be delivered before the start of the module.

Assessment

Requirements for a pass

This module is marked on a pass/fail basis.

To pass the module, students need to achieve all of the following:

  1. A mark of 5.5 overall, with no element (Speaking, Listening, ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø and Writing) below 5.0 in the TEEP
  2. An average of 40% across the coursework elements

Penalties for late submission of summative assessment

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

Assessments with numerical marks

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of three working days;
  • the mark awarded due to the imposition of the penalty shall not fall below the threshold pass mark, namely 40% in the case of modules at Levels 4-6 (i.e. undergraduate modules for Parts 1-3) and 50% in the case of Level 7 modules offered as part of an Integrated Masters or taught postgraduate degree programme;
  • where the piece of work is awarded a mark below the threshold pass mark prior to any penalty being imposed, and is submitted up to three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline), no penalty shall be imposed;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

Assessments marked Pass/Fail

  • where the piece of work is submitted within three working days of the deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): no penalty will be applied;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): a grade of Fail will be awarded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
