Summary module description:
This module consists of one academic year in a work placement either in the UK or overseas.
Aims:
This module aims to develop students' ability to work responsibly and effectively in a university, school or business environment in the UK or overseas country.
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module, students on a work placement are expected to understand:
- the structure, functioning and operating procedures of the company/university/school;
- their role within the company/university/school, with particular focus on the contributions they have made and specific achievements attained;
- the results of the work they have undertaken and estimate its usefulness to the company/university, school;
- the main lessons that have been learnt as a result of the work placement in terms both of the knowledge that has been acquired and the skills and competencies that have been developed.
Additional outcomes:
The fostering of a systematic approach to self-awareness and personal skills development; understanding language use in a professional setting;Ìý increasing awareness of key challenges and opportunities relating to professional communication faced in the global workplace settings.
Outline content:
Students will be employed by a company/university/school to undertake a range of responsible activities, which will vary according to the company.

Work Placement Report (2,500 words) to be submitted by noon on the first day of the Autumn Term of the Final Year.
Formative assessment methods:
Penalties for late submission:
The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:
- where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
Assessment requirements for a pass:
40% or more overall.
Reassessment arrangements:
The assignment must be re-submitted by the first Monday of the Spring Term of the Final Year.
