Summary module description:
The aim of the study abroad year is to increase students’ skills and knowledge in literature while enabling them to broaden their cultural experience by studying in a different institution and a different country. By the end of the module, students will have studied on several courses at their chosen host university, selected in consultation with the Study Abroad coordinator. Students may also undertake independent study in the host country (such as but not limited to language study). The module encourages students to be more self-reliant and gives them an opportunity to broaden their education through travelling and studying abroad and to experience the life and culture of another country.
Aims:
This module enables students to enhance their knowledge of the study of literature and to provide students with an understanding of how it is perceived and taught overseas. Students will develop an awareness of different methodologies and will develop research and writing skills appropriate to their new learning environment.
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module, students are expected to have:
- followed an appropriate number of literature courses at the partner institution, as agreed by both institutions on a Learning Agreement;
- completed the appropriate assessments and examination requirements for these courses.
Additional outcomes:
The module aims to encourage the development of communication and personal development skills and the fostering of a systematic approach to self-awareness. The overall experience will enhance future career development and employability.
Outline content:
Students will choose from a range of courses offered by the host university in consultation with the Study Abroad coordinator and as agreed by both institutions. Students will follow courses relating to subject areas they have already taken - in order to extend and develop their knowledge - and/or to subject areas where they have restricted knowledge but which they wish to study for personal, academic or career reasons.
