Summary module description:

In this module students with critically engage with key sources of high quality research that has led to new, substantive, theoretically grounded insights and understandings in the field of educational leadership and management. Students will become acquainted with a wide range of methodologies and interdisciplinary approaches that researchers have employed. The module is set within the context of an ever-changing political climate and an increasing culture of both market and government accountability. Students will critically reflect on, and challenge, some of the underlying values present within leadership and management practice in today’s education sector and examine how this has led to new streams of research. The module requires students to reflect on their own learning and professional practice and it cumulates with an individual small-scale research study to highlight the excitement and challenge of conducting academic research, while developing develop students’ knowledge and understanding of educational leadership and management theory and its links to professional practice.


Aims:

- To develop an understanding of the key concepts and issues that researchers have explored in educational leadership and management - To critically examine the literature associated with educational leadership and management and relate this to professional practice - To critically examine theories, frameworks and conceptual models of leadership and management from education, and elsewhere, and relate these to professional practice - To enable participants to reflect upon, and enhance, their own professional practice as educational leaders and managers - To provide an opportunity for participants to undertake a small-scale research study in the area of educational leadership and management within their own institution.


Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of this module participants will be able toÌý- Demonstrate an understanding of the key concepts and issues surrounding educational leadership and management and how these relate to political, cultural and societal influencesÌý- Critically examine relevant theories and literature associated with educational leadership and management and relate this to professional practiceÌý- Demonstrate the ability to undertake a small-scale research study in the area of educational leadership and managementÌý- Reflect upon and enhance their own professional practice as educational leaders and managers.

- Students will have developed increased depth to their understanding of the research processÌý- Students will have increased their ability to communicate complex information in oral communicationÌý- Students will develop a creative, critical and analytical approach to practice.


Outline content:

- An introduction to research and theoretical developments in educational leadership and managementÌý- Post-heroic developments in leadership studiesÌý- Researching the lived experience of leadership learningÌý- Researching the subtle moral, emotional and relational aspects of leadership - Theoretical developments in women's leadership -ÌýResearching culture and identity in relation to educational leadership and managementÌý- Substantive, theoretically grounded insights in performativity, accountability and evaluation research.


Global context:

This module will draw on Western theories of Leadership and Management in the main, but reference will also be made to other international contexts as appropriate (for example, China, Saudi Arabia) and how the international economic, political and cultural environment affects leadership and management practice (for example, globalisation and market forces).


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Teaching and learning activities take place over 6 sessions that include lectures, seminars and peer-led group activities and discussions. These are supplemented with individual/group tutorials. Independent study will be facilitated by handouts, self-directed tasks and directed reading, together with on-line learning tasks to help achieve the intended learning outcomes.

For the assignment, students will be required to undertake a small scale research project on a topic of their choice related to Educational Leadership and Management. Exact topics will be negotiated with the module leader. This research project is then to be written up and submitted as a research report with a reflective element. The word count is 6,000 words.


Formative assessment methods:
Students are required to submit a research proposal form which needs to be approved by the module leader before any research is carried out.

Additionally, throughout the module, students will be expected to contribute to on-line discussion forums, for example, wikis and blogs. Information describing an appropriate contribution will be provided in the programme handbook.

Penalties for late submission:

The below information applies to students on taught programmes except those on Postgraduate Flexible programmes. The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
