Summary module description:
This module will teach students about the human cardiovascular system and associated diseases. The module will examine the current therapeutic options available to prevent and manage cardiovascular disease. Building on the knowledge and skills developed in the Autumn term, this Spring term module will place particular emphasis on current research to help convey mechanistic insights into diseases processes.
Aims:
To enable students to understand the main areas of cardiovascular pathology and therapeutics.
Assessable learning outcomes:
At the end of the module students should have understood cardiac anatomy and physiology (structure and function of the cardiovascular system in mammals). This understanding will form the basis of cardiovascular pathology and therapy. Students will have understood the major causes of cardiovascular disease, risks factors and treatment. There will be particular focus on mechanistic causes of disease and up to date research approaches on prevention/cure. Students will develop critical analysis andpresentation skills through problem-based learning and analysis of scientific literature.

Outline content:
This module will cover all the major topics in cardiovascular medicine, including cell signalling, apoptosis, growth regulation, hypertension, cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure, stroke, atherosclerosis, restenosis and haemostasis. Several staff in the Biomedical Sciences section of the School of Biological Sciences will contribute to this module. The lecture material will be re-enforced and developed through the use of tutorials and problem-based learning presentations. The assessable learning outcomes will include an understanding of human cardiovascular disease and therapeutics. Student critical thinking, analysis and presentation skills will also be assessed through written examinations, tutorials and oral presentations.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
This module will primarily be delivered by attendance at lectures, seminars, small group tutorials and problem$£based learning presentations. Additionally, individual study will be required to review the literature in preparation for the tutorials and presentations.

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:
- where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
