Summary module description:
This module will explore and critically appraise recent trends in theoretical constructs of educational leadership that trace developments in school/instructional leadership, to transformational leadership, toward distributed leadership. Linking theory with the practice of doing educational leadership, a concurrent focus will be placed on individual development to provide opportunities for learners to engage in and practice key behaviours associated with leading in an educational context.

Aims:


  • To develop knowledge and understanding of practices which are essential to effective educational leadership performance;

  • Provide learners with a better understanding of their own approach to leading and ways in which they can develop that approach further;

  • To provide opportunities to experiment with a number of key leadership practices with the aim of developing them into habits;

  • To expand understanding of the actions which can ‘count’ as constituting educational ‘leadership’.


Assessable learning outcomes:

At the end of the module the learner will be expected to be able to:




  • Identify theories of leadership for effective leading of self, others, teams and educational workplaces.

  • Demonstrate an ability to identify and analyse leadership competencies for developing self, others and teams and educational workplaces.

  • Reflect on the development of own leadership capabilities and identify areas for improvement.

  • Demonstrate self-awareness and ability to reflect on developing personal philosophy and identity as an educational leader.


Additional outcomes:
Cognitive/Intellectual: Analysis and evaluation of theories to develop leadership competencies.

Knowledge and Understanding: Knowledge and understanding of theories and concepts for effective educational leadership. Cultivate self-understanding for leadership development and practice.

Research Skills: The ability to identify sources of information, evaluate evidence and collate information from a range of sources, including lectures, seminars and library resources.

Key/transferable skills: Development of leadership skills for influencing, communicating, persuading, building relationships, working/leading in teams, resolving conflict, managing time. Develop skills in both written and oral communication. The development of co-operative learning skills - sharing information, discussing course topics and contributing to debates. The ability to read and understand relevant core texts, utilise theories and concepts in class discussions, coursework and for personal development. The ability to reflect upon learning in order to evaluate personal performance and plan future learning.

Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
