Summary module description:

Students will prepare for their dissertation by completing a series of workshops, an assessed proposal, which will include an annotated bibliography, and a presentation.


Aims:

To prepare students for their dissertation by workshops and individual tutorial.


Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module the student is expected to be able to:




  • design a viable research proposal

  • develop an initial annotated bibliography

  • give an oral presentation on an aspect of their dissertation


Additional outcomes:

Workshops and tutorial will develop skills in research, bibliography and communication.


Outline content:

Students will attend a series of workshops on research skills, and will submit a dissertation proposal of 500 words, and an annotated bibliography of 5 items (200 words on each item), by the end of the summer term preceding Part 3.Ìý In week 3 of autumn term of Part 3 they will give a 10-minute oral presentation on an aspect of their dissertation.

Workshops, supplemented with one tutorial meeting with a dissertation supervisor.

Dissertation Proposal with Annotated BibliographyÌýdue in at 12 noon on the last Friday of the summer term of Part 2. 70%



Oral presentation due in week 3 of autumn term of Part 3. 30%


Formative assessment methods:

Interaction in workshops; discussion in tutorial meeting. Listed under Autumn term above are a 1-hour tutorial and 3 hours of practical classes and workshops which occur in the preceding Part 2 Summer term.ÌýThese cover library skills, study skills and presentation skills.Ìý There will also be a one-hour information meeting in the preceding Part 2 Spring term.


Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.

40% overall

Reassessment arrangements:

Resubmission in August for the proposal and annotated bibliography.Ìý Resubmission of the oral presentation on case-by-case basis.
