Summary module description:

The fundamental content of the module is the principles and techniques of quantification for infrastructure and civil engineering works.Ìý


Aims:

This module is designed for students who already have some knowledge of construction technology and the quantification of building works. The aims of this module are to develop an understanding of principles and practices of infrastructure and civil engineering quantification as well as to allow for computer-aided quantification.Ìý


Assessable learning outcomes:


  • Understand the fundamental principles of quantification standard for infrastructure and civil engineering works;

  • Appreciate class structures and preambles of standard method of measurement for infrastructure and civil engineering works;

  • Demonstrate general principles of quantification based on the measurement standard for infrastructure and civil engineering works;

  • Quantify the common elements of infrastructure and civil engineering works based on the measurement standard for infrastructure and civil engineering works;

  • Produce Bills of Quantities based on the measured elements of infrastructure and civil engineering works using computer technology.


Additional outcomes:

Students should be able to work independently or within a team and present the outcome of their work to course staff and other members of the class

  • Fundamental principles of the measurement standard for infrastructure and civil engineering works;

  • Class structures and preambles

  • Quantification of:

    • Site Preparation Works and Earthworks

    • Piling Works

    • Concrete Works

    • Pipeworks

    • Drainage Works

    • Roads and Pavings

    • Rail track



  • Production of Bills of Quantities using computer technology


Global context:

In order to localise the module content that suits the local practice in Malaysia, MyCESMM2 will be used as the main reference for the module where students will need to understand its fundamental, usages as well as its application to the quantification for infrastructure and civil engineering works.


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

To facilitate students understanding on the quantification, lectures will be delivered by first introducing basic infrastructure and civil engineering technology, then it will be followed by the principles of quantification for infrastructure and civil engineering works. The lectures will be supplemented with hands-on workshops, exercises and discursive seminars.Ìý

Summative Assessment Methods:

Summative assessment- Examinations:

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

30% written assignment is made of quantification assessment of one or two selected topics.

70% class tests are divided into (1) computer-based test which contributes 20% of the overall assessment; and (2) in-class test which is made of quantification assessment of one or two selected topics that students are required to complete within 2 ½ hours, contributing to 50% for the overall assessment.


Formative assessment methods:

Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.

Assessment requirements for a pass:

A mark of 40% overall


Reassessment arrangements:

If student fails the assessment, student will be required to carry out a written assignment including essay of a selected topic.
