Summary module description:

ThisÌýmodule explores both practical and strategic aspects of real estate management for commercial property,Ìýfocussing on asset and property management. It is considered from the perspectiveÌýof bothÌýinvestors and occupiers, including corporates (who may be tenants or owners/occupiers). Underpinning the module is the application of key management and business concepts to real estate advice and management.


Aims:

The module aims to provide the student with an understanding of the role, responsibilities and skills required of the real estateÌýassetÌýmanager and a critical appreciation of the diversity and development of the management functions.ÌýÌý


Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module,Ìýit is expected that the student will be able to:Ìý




  • Identify the main activities and responsibilities of real estate managers;Ìý

  • Critically assess how real estate management can add value;Ìý

  • Show how asset management relates to the organisational strategy;Ìý

  • Examine the ways in which asset management performance can be measured;Ìý

  • Discuss and appra ise how emerging trends and new issues affect real estate managers in different sectors and specialisms, and from different perspectives.Ìý

Outline content:

The module spans strategic asset management for investors, corporates and the not for profit sector, as well as operational activities. Specific areas studied will vary but may include;ÌýÌý




  • Active asset management;Ìý

  • Landlord and tenant relations;Ìý

  • Property management delivery;Ìý

  • Corporate Real Estate structures.Ìý

  • Performance measurement and New working practices.Ìý & nbsp;

  • Corporate Real Estate alignment to corporate strategy.Ìý

  • Public sector asset management;Ìý

  • Environmental issues.Ìý


Global context:

The issues covered have international significance.Ìý

Summative Assessment Methods:

Written exam 50
Written assignment including essay 50

Summative assessment- Examinations:

One two-hour exam paper to be taken at the time of final examinations.


Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

One written assignment of 2,500 words submitted in week 4 or 5 of Spring term (timetable weeks 23 or 24).


Formative assessment methods:

Convenor comments and feedback during seminars.ÌýÌýFeedback from coursework is formative for the exam.ÌýÌý


Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.

Assessment requirements for a pass:
A mark of at least 40% overall.

Reassessment arrangements:

Reassessment will be by a three-hour exam paper, subject to variation by the Examination Board where appropriate.
