In this module students are introduced to a range of speech and language deficits found in adults and children; to relate these findings to their knowledge of linguistics and normal speech and language processing.Ìý

To provide students with an introduction to a range of speech and language deficits found in adults and children; to relate these findings to their knowledge of linguistics and normal speech and language processing.Ìý


Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of this module students should be able to:

• identify and interpret major types of speech and language impairments in adults and children

• to identify the linguistic characteristics of each of these types in the language behaviour of individuals;

• to appraise critically the causes of these impairments and the conditions associated with them;

• organise their knowledge and articulate their arguments effectively.

Additional outcomes:

Students gain some insights into the problems of identifying and classifying normal and abnormal speech and language and into the broader consideration of cognition in speech and language impairments.Ìý


Outline content:

Following an introductory session on levels of breakdown in human communication in terms of linguistic description and basic neurology for speech and language, the following impairments will be covered: Stammering, phonological impairment in children, motor speech disorders, autism, specific language impairment, language in learning disability (children), right hemisphere damage, aphasia.Ìý
