Summary module description:

This module recognises the critical importance of managing the whole leadership space to enable the long-term success of contemporary organisations.Ìý It is specifically aimed at supporting programme members to pass on their leadership skills and practice to other individuals, teams and entire organisations.Ìý This supports the module's fundamental belief that leaders are responsible not only for their own leadership development but for the development of leadership in others.Ìý A holistic overview of leadership development is provided which frames the organizational contextual within which leadershiptakes place.Ìý It is delivered by a combination of face-to-face workshops, small group and action learning sets, personal reflection and self-study.

This module aims to:




  • Understand the context of leadership development at both organisational and individual level.Ìý

  • Develop the capability of individuals to plan, manage and reflect on their individual personal leadership and consider how this can be used to support the leadership development of others.

  • Encourage development of behavioural skills in individuals to increase the effectiveness and appropriateness of their ability to develop leadership in others.

  • Recognise the importance of both developing future leaders as well as developing leadership capability within an organisational setting.

  • Develop an awareness of the ethical, moral and practical issues in relation to developing leadership in others.

Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module it is expected that students will be able to:Ìý




  • Demonstrate knowledge of a range of different theoretical models and approaches to learning and leadership development.

  • Have an appreciation of the organisational context of leadership development.

  • Knowledge of a range of techniques for problem-solving, decision-making and managing feedback in leadership development.

  • Support the leadersh ip development of a colleague.

  • Critical analysis in order to engage others, assess the context and decide on the most appropriate leadership development interventions.

  • Have an appreciation of communication skills, including questioning, listening and managing differences and conflict.


Additional outcomes:

Self-reflection on how their support of the leadership development of others, impacts on their own leadership ability.Ìý


Outline content:

The module covers the following topics:




  • Review of programme content

  • Organisational context

  • Leadership development

  • Developing leadership in others

  • Talent management

  • Succession planning


Global context:

Consideration is given to leadershipÌýdevelopmentÌýwithin a global context taking account of different cultures and values.Ìý


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Programme members will self study content online via the Canvas platform typically over a 4 month period.Ìý This provides a structured and engaging environment where core readings and videos are supplemented by practical application of the material to programme members work environments.Ìý Sharing of the practical applications via learning team discussions is encouraged.Ìý Two days of workshops provides an environment where module content can be discussed in more detail via tutor led engagement and learning team exercises.

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

Number and length of assignments and in-class tests, and if available, the submission date for each assignment (expressed as a week of a specific Term):



One 5,000 word individual assignment, to be submitted as per the submission schedule for the cohort.


Formative assessment methods:

Work which provides opportunities to improve performance (e.g.through feedback provided) but which does not necessarily always contribute towards the overall module mark):



Workshop activities are undertaken to support formative assessment of the learning. These activities are not assessed for the purposes of the final module mark.Ìý This formative assessment takes the form of feedback given to students at workshops on syndicate work, presentations and exercises.


Penalties for late submission:

These are in accordance with the arrangements laid out in the MA Leadership programme handbook.


Assessment requirements for a pass:

In the individual assignment, a pass mark of 50% must be achieved.


Reassessment arrangements:

Reassessment by revision of existing assignment.Ìý One re-submission allowed, capped at 50%.Ìý Timing of resubmission as set out in the MA Leadership programme handbook.
