Summary module description:

The module isÌýan elective asÌýpart of Stage 1 of the MA Leadership, a part-timeÌýprogrammeÌýfor experienced leaders or managers with significant leadership responsibility. This module is specifically aimed atÌýexploring the key elements of Nordic Leadership,ÌýcharacterizedÌýbyÌýaÌýtrust based, collaborative, andÌýholisticÌýapproach.ÌýThis module covers how this approach contributes toÌýThe Nordics being global leaders in key societal measures and sustainable businessÌýindexes,Ìýand its relevance in times of extreme change andÌýcomplexity. It is delivered by a combination of face-to-face workshops, action learning sets, personal reflection and self-study, over a period ofÌýseveralÌýmonths. The module will be offeredÌýalongside other modules covering leadership concepts and frameworks.Ìý


Aims:

This module aims to:Ìý





  • Develop the capabilities of individuals to challenge traditionalÌýpower-based, command and controlÌýapproachesÌýto leadershipÌý




  • Develop an awareness of the history and roots of Nordic Leadership traced back to the Viking era and the 9 Viking Virtues of: Courage, Truth, Honor, Fidelity, Hospitality, Discipline, Self-Reliance, Industriousness, PerseveranceÌýÌý




  • Develop an understanding of the Nordic region leading in global societal and sustainability indexes and the role of leadershipÌý




  • Encourage individuals to considerÌýtheÌýtype of leadership necessary to contribute to meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development GoalsÌý(SDGs)Ìý







  • Develop the awareness of the ethical andÌýsustainableÌýissues in relation to leadershipÌý




  • Encourage leaders to reflect on how they could incorporate Nordic Leadership into their own organization.ÌýÌý

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Teaching methods include working in a whole group of up to 50 with one or two tutors, and in smallerÌýgroupsÌýÌýwithÌýotherÌýprogrammeÌýmembers. Other learning activities take place in pairs and individual reflection.Ìý



Teaching includes input from tutors, demonstrations of techniques and practice in small groups. Plenary discussion and table discussions are encouraged. Formative and summative feedback is given as appropriate.Ìý


Programme members are expected to draw on their practical leadership experience in their own or otherÌýorganizationsÌýto practice and consolidate their learning through planned leadership development targets. AfterÌýthe final workshop in this module, theÌýprogrammeÌýmembers complete additional leadership practice and write their assignments.Ìý



They have access to the Virtual Learning Environment throughout theÌýprogramme, until the end of t heir registration period.Ìý

Programme members will design a range of leadership development and learning activities which provide the opportunity to demonstrate acquired skill and develop further. These will be discussed in the final assessment, which will comprise:Ìý



Ìý





  • A written assignment of 5000 words, based on the experience of the leadership practice and personal leadership development during the overall period of the module. This should reflect on the activities which took place both in ‘live’ practice and at the workshops, the learning gained from it, theÌýprogrammeÌýmember’s learning reflections, and be underpinned with reference and critical analysis of the relevant literature.Ìý

The assignment is the only piece of work assessed in this module. It is expected that theÌýprogrammeÌýmember will reference the other elements of their development portfolio, such as learning logs and reflective documents, and include them as required in the appendix of the assignment. These additional elements of the portfolio will be included in the same electronic submission as the assignment.Ìý
