Summary module description:
This module introduces students to a range of mainstream and critical theories as well as empirical studies in the wider field of Organisational Behaviour. It explores people as a resource that is available to organisations as they seek to achieve their objectives.Ìý It recognises and explores the specific nature of this resource in the sense that people are more than simply units of labour.Ìý It will explore individual difference and people as social beings.Ìý It will question issues of organisational effectiveness and performance.
Aims:
The module aims to develop the students’ understanding of the concepts and principles of the management of people and to evaluate and interpret these within the context in which their organisations operate.

It aims to prepare students to:
- Engage with the complex processes by which individuals can contribute to organisational outcomes
- To account for differences in behaviour, performance and learning based on an understanding of individual difference and an individual's interactions with others and social groups.
- To illustrate and explain different levels of engagement and motivation.
- To assess how effectively an organisation uses its people.

- Construct critical and academically robust arguments drawing on organisational behaviour theories and research and apply them to the analysis of workplace-related issues.

- Apply a broad range of techniques for managing people and their individual differences.
- Explain the theories and mechanisms for creating employee motivation and engagement whilst recognising individual and cultural differences.
- Explain the benefits and challenges of cross-functional working and team dynamics to deliver positive results.
- Articulate the role of power and politics in organisations and their impact on organizational behaviour and performance.
Outline content:
Students will be required to explore individual difference and identity in the context of management challenges and question the way individuals may contribute to organisational aims. Students will be able to explore factors that contribute to engagement and motivation, both internal and external to the workplace as well as cultural concerns at the macro-level. They will explore people as social beings and how this impacts behaviours and performance. They will be expected to apply learning to their workplace and be able to assess individual and organisational practice in the management of people.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The module will be taught using a blended learning approach.Ìý This will include directed self-study, workshops, group work, peer support, and other learning activities.Ìý During the module, students will follow a guided-learning path that will require them to read materials, access other core and optional learning materials and undertake a range of activities.Ìý In addition to the learning path, students will attend workshops.Ìý These are facilitated sessions that will help c onsolidate knowledge, apply it the workplace and develop higher order cognitive skills of analysis and evaluation.Ìý Students will be expected to relate their learning to their day-to-day work.Ìý

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:
Students will work in groups to apply learning to an assessment of the way their organisation manages people which they will present (50%).ÌýÌý They will be individually required to reflect on how selected concepts and theories covered in this module can be used to build a more inclusive workplace. (50%)

Will be embedded in the learning path and workshop activities.Ìý Peer review will be an integral element
