Summary module description:
This module briefly introduces theory of heat transfer, overview of building simulations and it is designed to equip students through training and demonstration of an Industry standard software, with skills of computerised modelling and simulation techniques.
The module provides the basis to explore through modelling the mechanism and operational applications of buildings. The Software used is Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES - ).
Aims:
To provide knowledge of building simulations and hands-on practice of simulation using commercial software packages such as Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES).
Assessable learning outcomes:
Define the purpose of building simulations
- Produce building simulation models
- Propose scenarios which affect energy consumption, refurbishment etc
- Perform simulations using computer software packages
- Analyse results and propose optimum solutions
Additional outcomes:
Students should be able to work within a team and present the outcome of their work to course staff and other members of the class.
Outline content:
Developing the context of simulating a case building, providing evaluation and analysis of the data obtained against potential benchmarks.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Lectures (minimal) but predominantly demonstrations and hands-on step by step training of how the software is used.

Formative assessment methods:
Students are given scenarios which they model as part of the demonstration and training from which feedback is provided and they feed forward for the next scenario during the block teaching week period.
