Perception and NeuroscienceÌý2


Aims:

The aims of the module are that students should further their knowledge on how we sense and perceive the world, and increase their understanding of brain structure and function and how this affects human behaviour. Ìý


Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module students will be able to describe and critically evaluate research on:




  1. Cognitive and affective neuroscience

  2. Perception of visual information

Outline content:

This module will cover topics in perception and neuroscience, such as visual perception, the neural bases of cognition and systems of motivation. The topics will build on the knowledge and understanding students gained from PY1BP.


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:


  1. Lectures on perception and neuroscience

  2. Online discussion forum following lectures.

  3. Recommended reading in perception and neuroscience.

  4. Continuous exercises tied to course content, including web-based exercises.

  5. Seminars on selected perception and neuroscience topics

  6. Written essays addressing perception and neuroscience topicsÌý

The summer exam is 1 hour, multiple choice

Coursework involves continuous online assessment of students' understanding of the material covered in lectures (30%).

Penalties for late submission:

The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day[1] (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
