Summary module description:
This module considers current issues within professional practice for Speech and Language Therapy within Health and Education contexts and prepares the students for professional life. It aims to develop their ability to reflect on continuous personal development as preparation for the workforce.
Aims:
The aim of this module is to develop a strong understanding of and insight into current professional issues and to extend and refine professional knowledge and skills. The module aims to provide students with an understanding of the changing nature of the knowledge base and modes of delivery in the context of health education and social care and prepare them for their lifelong career learning
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module, it is expected that the student will be able to:
•Demonstrate and reflect on clinical processes and procedures at a level commensurate with pre-registration requirements
•Demonstrate critical identification and selection of information and evidence of knowledge and clinical skills to produce a professional portfolio.
•Identify, outline and integrate the issues within the modern NHS relating to clinical governance and
clinical effectiveness into their clinical work
•Synthesise theory and clinical skills to produce generic principles that can be applied to any mode of service delivery
Additional outcomes:
The module also aims to assist students in the critical evaluation of collaborative practice in the clinical and educational contexts and critically evaluate their role as a professional member of the team. Students will develop their oral communication skills and their ability to work and facilitate within a larger group context along with the consideration of leadership skills.
Outline content:
This module develops and builds on knowledge, skills and professional issues developed in the previous years. Emphasis is placed on the synthesis, integration and application of theoretical knowledge to holistic case management. Professional development and working within the NHS/Education is considered under topics of clinical governance, management and service delivery, and the role of the RCSLT and adherence to the HPC standards of conduct, performance and ethics. The final component addresse
s career issues, applying for jobs, preparation for interviews and continuing professional development and maintenance of professional standards.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
There will be 20 hours of teaching delivered in lecture and seminar form in the Autumn and Spring term. University staff, visiting speech and language therapists and other visiting lecturers and professionals will deliver teaching.

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:
Students will submit a CPD portfolio in the last week of the Spring term.
Formative assessment methods:
Presentation of topics in small groups- peer marked and peer feedback and engagement in writing personal statements and interviewing skills.

Assessment requirements for a pass:
A mark of 50% overall
Reassessment arrangements:
Coursework will be carried forward if it bears a mark of 50%. Otherwise it must be resubmitted by September.
Additional Costs (specified where applicable):
4) Printing and binding: Portfolios need to be submitted in hard copy due to the high number of appendices. Students need to budget to print 1500 word narrative and all the relevant appendices (this varies between approximately 20 and 100)
