Summary module description:
This module is for students who have successfully completed the integrated foundation year at the NUIST ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø Academy, but have not yet met the University’s English requirement. The module will provide students with the opportunity to consolidate and extend the academic language, skills, and strategies developed during the foundation year.
This module is delivered at the NUIST ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø Academy, China.
Aims:
To develop students’ academic language and study skills to meet the needs of their undergraduate studies, and to improve their ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of complex academic texts
- Demonstrate understanding of lectures and talks on concrete and abstract topics, delivered in clearly articulated standard speech
- Present ideas on familiar academic topics in a clear and coherent manner Ìý
- Take an active part in discussions on academic topics, including exchanging inform ation, developing ideas and opinions, with limited planning time
- Respond in writing to a given question in a relevant, coherent, and communicative manner, drawing on appropriate sources
Additional outcomes:
By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:
- Work independently to locate and evaluate appropriate resources for language learning
- Work independently to locate and evaluate appropriate sources relevant to formative coursework assignments
- Identify their specific language learning needs
- Work on group assignments effectively and collaboratively
Outline content:
The module will develop the following skills in the use of English for Academic Purposes:
- ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø: skills and strategies for reading for specific academic purposes; selecting and summarising information; monitoring comprehension
- Listening: skills and strategies for identifying main and supporting details, note-taking, decoding connected speech, monitoring comprehension
- Speaking: presenting ideas, participating in discussions, de veloping fluency and communicative strategies
- Writing: paragraphing and essay structure; introductions and conclusions; cohesive devices; supporting arguments
- Language knowledge, including vocabulary and grammatical structures
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
This module will employ a communicative approach to language development, and students are expected to be actively engaged. Students will be expected to work independently outside class, both individually and in groups.

The portfolio will comprise 2 in-class progress tests and coursework assessments submitted during the semester.
Formative assignments throughout the semester will allow students to receive feedback indicating their performance in the four skills areas.
